Flint Hills is located just outside of Wichita, Kansas in Andover. I had heard negative things about the course from others who have played it, however my group and I LOVED the track which plays quite differently than the other Top 100 course in Kansas, Prairie Dunes. Flint Hills is an impeccably manicured property with a beautiful club house and practice facility. My group was fortunate to stay the night in a cabin (which I highly recommend if you come in – do this). Dinner is served in the cabin by a local chef.
The day begins in the club house with a very hearty breakfast. We took carts which ended up being just fine (I usually enjoy walking more than carts) as the facility is quite large and there is a lot of space between the holes. Each hole feels isolated and we hardly ever saw another group. The topography of the course is very “un-Kansas” as it is quite hilly and wooded.
Most impressive was the quality of the zoysia grass. The ball sat-up perfectly as so (see below) on the fairway and was very green.
I do “get” why some arent super impressed with this Fazio design as it is hard to remember each hole and many blend together. However, this is a place worthy of the top-100 and a fun visit especially if you stay overnight in their luxurious cabins.
Here are some photos of our day:
This is a view inside the cabin:
There’s a practice tee right behind the lodge.
Everything is pretty fancy, even the golf carts:
Welcome to Kansas… Here’s a storm shelter inside the cabins.
