I was very happy to find a host for a round at Riviera on a recent trip to Los Angeles. On the first tee the host reflected on how fortunate he is to be a member of such a beautiful, well designed and maintained course where the weather cooperates for most of the year. I fully agree with him – Riviera is an awesome course, and man, the weather was just perfect.
The course design, like all the top 100, is incredibly memorable. A few gem holes:
— The forth hole, a 223 yard (from the whites!) par 3, uphill. In my group three out of four of us had a driver out from the tee. In addition, the hole is protected by a bunker, so for us mortals you have to drive the ball up to the right of the green and hope it rolls down to the left. Ben Hogan said this is the best par three in golf. Here’s a photo of the hole and a plaque:
— I also thought the par 3 sixth hole was cool and interesting. Note the sandtrap right in the middle of the green:
