Just outside Detroit nestled in the leafy suburbs lies one of the great golf courses in America, Oakland Hills. The South Course has played host to 17 Major Championships including: six U.S. Opens; two U.S. Senior Opens; U.S. Women’s Amateur; two U.S. Men’s Amateurs; Western Open; the Carling World Open; the 35th Ryder Cup in 2004; and three PGA Championships–including the 90th PGA Championship in 2008.
The Donald Ross gem was in perfect shape as we enjoyed our fall round. The beautiful club house, which is in this photo, can be seen on a number of holes and adds to the atmosphere of the place.
The course is challenging but playable. The approaches are quite hard as nearly every hole is protected by massive bunkering. A wonderful and fun classic course that stands the test of time.
