Built in 2015, Great Horse is a relatively new entry to the golf community and one not widely known (yet).
A number of my friends from the Hartford, CT area (where I grew up) have been sharing with me the news of this up-and-coming club for the past few years and today I finally got the chance to check it out. An elegant yet somehow casual playground the club offers a modern day alternative to yesteryear’s version of a “country club.” Like many other top courses in the US, Great Horse is the vision and passion of a local golf-loving family, the Antonacci’s who wanted to create a super fun place to hang out with their friends and extended family.
The experience of Great Horse begins with a massive practice facility including a spacious well-kept range and a beautiful short game area.
The clubhouse sits overlooking many of the holes and includes a couple amenities you wouldn’t normally find even at the top courses such as outdoor sports bar with weather-proof TVs alongside firepits, a full spa, a gym that would make a NYC Equinox jealous, and a stunning pool with cabanas and a jungle gym for the kiddos.
The course which was designed by Brian Silva plays fun, firm and fair. The course has the distance to host any PGA level event for sure (thankfully my hosts did not make me play from the backtees). The first and tenth holes play majorly downhill and are super unique holes that are a bit scary from the tee, but actually easier than they look. A number of holes challenge the player to either hit straight at the stick or bank the ball off a punchbowl (or half punchbowl) type embankment. The variation of shot selection to the same target made for a fun round.
Overall, I would challenge the raters to play this course and explain why it isn’t better than two hilly courses on similar land in the top-100, Alotion and Hudson National? To me it feels like we will see this course make its way onto the top-100 lists over the next few years.
Check it out… well worth the drive especially if you find yourself north of NYC, or West of Boston anytime soon.
